Not all wrinkles are made equal

What are wrinkles and why do we get them? A simple question with a complex answer.

In general we develop wrinkles as we get older, but there are lots of other factors that affect our skin. There are many ways to manage wrinkles ranging from injectables, microneedling and chemical peels. In order to find the best option for you, it is important to understand what type of wrinkles are present and why they have occurred.

Wrinkles can be grouped into three main categories – dynamic, static and wrinkle folds.

Dynamic Wrinkles

The first wrinkles to appear on a person’s face are usually due to facial expressions. These are known as dynamic wrinkles and occur when our facial muscles contract and squeeze the overlying skin together causing lines and wrinkles. Common sites for this are the forehead, crows feet and between the eyebrows.

Botulinum toxin is excellent for these as it weakens these muscles, lessening their effect on the overlying skin. Dynamic wrinkles with time, if not treated, can cause permanent creasing in the skin known as static wrinkles.

Static Wrinkles

These are present even when the face is resting, and occur due to a loss of our skin’s collagen and elasticity. Other factors that contribute are skin damage from the sun, genetic factors, smoking and poor nutrition and hydration.

Although Botulinum toxin can help smooth these out, it cannot completelt erase them and other treatments are often also needed. These include dermal filler, microneedling, fibroblast skin tightening, and chemical peels (to boost the skin collagen and aid resurfacing).

Prevention is better than cure and it is best to consider starting treatment once dynamic lines are significantly apparent.

WRINKLE FOLDS

These appear due to sagging of our facial structures that cause deep grooves in the skin. Common areas are the nasolabial folds and corner or the mouth folds (marionette folds). Injectable fillers containing hyaluronic acid can help lift and fill the sagging areas. This is a natural substance that we produce which adds volume and hydration to our skin. These are a very popular alternative to surgical procedures and can provide effects for up to 2 years with each treatment taking only around 30 minutes.
