Losing your hair can be very distressing regardless of age or gender. We understand that hair loss can have a profound effect on your appearance, confidence and self-esteem. Some forms of hair loss can be hereditary whereas others can be due to various other factors such as stress, alopecia, thyroid problems or vitamin deficiencies.
Hair loss can happen to both men or women and its impact on our clients cannot be understated. Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) is a common hair loss disorder affecting 80% of men and 50% of women throughout their lifetime. Hair loss becomes more common with age, but its impact on a persons confidence and self perception doesn’t wane. You can even start to lose hair as early on as in your early 20s. Many men (and women) don’t know where to turn when they start to experience this distressing condition. Many resign themselves to losing their hair, often opting to wear wigs.
There is something that can be done about hair loss however. Peoples first thought is that they need a hair transplant. Whilst this is useful in cases where there are no living hair follicles in the area where hair is being transplanted, it comes with its own problems. Firstly, hair transplant has variable success and often many of the transplanted hairs fail to survive and grow. Hair needs to be extracted from another part of the scalp where hair is growing which can sometimes appear obvious a transplant has taken place. Furthermore as is the case in Androgenic Alopecia, transplanted hair will become subject to the same environment and hormonal stressors that caused the original hair loss, and therefore often thins with time anyway.
When caught early however, there is little need to resort to extreme measures such as hair transplant surgery. As you start to notice that hair is thinning from your hairline or crest, this is the time to act as the follicles are still alive. Topical treatments and medications, in addition to more novel treatments such as our microneedling and platelet rich fibrin have been clinically shown to have significant beneficial effects on halting hair loss and promoting hair regrowth. Even after hair loss surgery, may of these treatments such as platelet rich plasma/fibrin are recommended to be undertaken on a regular basis to help maintain the results of the original transplant surgery.
Many hair loss treatments are unavailable on the NHS, meaning people are often unsure where to turn to for help. Our doctors will listen to your hair loss concerns to gain an understanding of the underlying causes for you hair loss and formulate a treatment plan. It is crucial to understand the cause of your hair loss so that a suitable treatment plan can be made to address the problem. We can combine bespoke prescription medication with some other specialist treatments like microneedling and Platelet Rich Fibrin injections (PRF) to give you optimal results.
microneedling and prf
Topical anaesthetic is applied to the areas of hair loss to numb the area. We use our FDA approved SkinPen microneedling device which reaches deep into the dermis to stimulate the hair follicles. The hair growth stimulating effect of the microneedling treatment is then further significantly enhanced with the addition of PRF injections into the scalp.
Vials of blood are drawn from your arm and centrifuged in special tubes in order to activate the fibrin and concentrate more growth factors, white blood cells, and stem cells. The PRF is then withdrawn from the vials and injected into the area of hair loss. A course of at least 3 treatments 1 month apart is recommended for optimal results.
Numerous studies have found this combination treatment to have a significant impact with respect to hair regrowth. It has been shown to reduce hair loss, increase hair thickness and density in patients. This treatment is only suitable where the hair follicle is still alive however.
